When Jesus was baptized, he experienced a spiritual high as he watched the heavens open up and a dove descend upon Him. He heard Godâs voice affirm Him and confirm His calling as Messiah. However, rather than leading Him to begin his ministry in Galilee right away, God guided Him immediately into an intense period of temptation, where he encountered the Devilâs advances at every turn. In his weakness from fasting, Jesus heard tempting voices to urge Him to use his power for selfish purposes. Rather than yielding to these thoughts, Jesus found strength to resist by quoting Scriptures that focused Him on Godâs purposes for His life. The Bible says that after this season of temptation, Jesus âreturned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit.â This event would empower Him for His ministry and prepare Him for the later challenges of going to the cross. In the same way, when we are following Christ, we will experience strong temptations that appeal to our basic human needs and desires. We can overcome these attempts to detour us from Godâs purposes by knowing and speaking Godâs Word to them. When we overcome temptation, we find greater strength to serve God and it results in more resolve to be faithful all the way. Will we equip ourselves for the battle?
